...ordered today!! The store's proprietress and I decided to ix-nay the pink ones in lieu of ones that are pale, pale blue (almost clear), with a pink strappy-thing. We'll get them in about a week and they are going to be mad cute! (although the strap on them will require me to sew with a needle and thread...Mara B, I apologize in advance for however that looks...a silver lining to having such poor vision will be that she won't notice how badly it may look, although it's probably advisable that she gets used to being embarrassed by her mom at a young age!) I once again felt grateful to be in Houston, as we left her ophthalmologist's office in the med center and zipped down a few blocks to an eyeglass retailer who obviously had a great deal of experience with pediatric/DS specs--she showed me what Mara's options will be in the future, including some glasses that are made specifically for kids with Down Syndrome! (I also decided that I am in the wrong business as an educator--I'm going to head over to China and set up an eyeglass factory that will produce tiny little frames so that I can gouge American families looking to outfit their babies with glasses!) The Divine Miss M had no say in this whole process, as she slept through the whole thing and, ironically, didn't open her eyes once! Perhaps she'll honor us next time by cracking her peepers!
At the one-week follow up appointment for the left eye, the good doctor Yen declared that everything looked great and they were healing well. That was all fine and good, but I was most happy to be told that I could ramp down the endless (read: every two hours) eyedrop applications I've been doing for the last few weeks and only apply them four times a day, as well as cut out one of the drops altogether--I think Mara smiled when she heard this directive. Girlfriend's been getting rather strong lately and her tiny fists of fury have grown more adept at swatting away my hands and the drops...I've nearly poked her in the eye more than few times now, much to my fright! I also discovered that my Mara B has what are known as Brushfield's spots in her left eye, which is a fancy name for tissue buildup on the iris (I thought it might have been an errant cut by the doctor and I'd still be suspicious if I hadn't googled some images). It's a somewhat common symptom in bambini with Down Syndrome. I think it's the most beautifully named symptom and has now become my favorite! (especially since it doesn't look too awful or affect her vision).
Stay tuned for pictures of my little sweet pea in her new glasses! (And, undoubtedly, some shots of her brother attempting to rip them off!)
