First off, I promise to cool it on the hackneyed song titles after this post (well, at least until I have another perfectly matching title and post). Secondly, I'm thrilled to announce that the surgery and follow-up on the left cataract is done! There was a brief blip during the surgery because baby girl's breathing tube got stopped up and she was unable to breath for a very short time (clinical term "apneated"--nice euphemism). Luckily the situation was quickly addressed and everything worked out well...but I'm glad I didn't have to watch it! She recovered wonderfully from the surgery and was wide awake and eating the next day! Her eye looked great at the follow up appointment the next day and we go back next week to get her prescription and fit her for her baby glasses!
It is simply amazing how quickly after taking off the eye patch we've noticed a difference in her sight! Mara is definitely showing signs of waking up visually to the world and it has been beautiful to watch as her eyes follow a mobile, or she gazes up at you and maintains eye contact, or (my personal favorite first), she flinches when her brother makes a sudden movement close to her (like say, jumping on the couch or diving in for a gigantic snuggle!) She is staying awake much more during the day, soaking in all the sights! She is also growing and finally starting to fit into some of her 0-3 month outfits, which Mommy loves--let the dress-up party begin! We are so proud of our Mara B for being so brave and strong through this whole ordeal! Thank you all for the countless calls, texts, and emails with your love, support, and concern. We're lucky to have so many great family members and friends!
Inadvertently taken artistic shot of cloudy left eye:
"Maa, don't take my picture looking like this!!!"--Tiny fists of fury, attempting to dislodge the abhorred eye patch!
Thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!! to the grandmas for coming to stay both weeks to help out--we couldn't have done it without you (and the many meals, trucks, cars, and cupcakes you provided!)
